The CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction equips aspiring builders, site managers, and supervisors with the skills and knowledge to succeed in small to medium-sized construction businesses.
Throughout the course, you will develop the technical expertise and practical capability to apply structural principles, building codes, Australian Standards, and legal requirements to both residential (Class 1 and 10 – up to two storeys) and commercial (Class 2 to 9 Type C) construction projects. With focus on building, you will also gain hands-on experience in planning, supervising, and managing construction work, preparing and administering contracts, estimating and scheduling resources, and ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation and safety standards.

This qualification covers every stage of the construction process with a specialisation pathway in building.
Completion of the general construction induction training program (White Card) is required for anyone undertaking construction work. The unit CPCCWHS1001 – Prepare to Work Safely in the Construction Industry satisfies this requirement.

As part of the learning cycle students may be required to undertake online research or activities each week in class during term time. |

Potential employment options are in building roles including residential and commercial with the following limitations:
- Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
- Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.
Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) or a range of Diploma qualifications, as well as higher education qualifications in building and construction.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and credit transfer options are available. Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge, and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees as well as the duration of the course.
Licensing
This course meets one of the requirements for applying for a builder’s license in NSW. To be qualified as a licensed builder in NSW, you need to apply for a building licence. The Course Facts
Duration:
The qualification is delivered over 78 weeks comprising of six (6) terms of 10 weeks each (60 weeks total) and holiday breaks amounting to 18 weeks.
Sessions are trainer-led in-group sizes of up to 20 participants. The training program is undertaken using a planned schedule in accordance with national standards.
A pre-enrolment interview will be conducted with the PEO/Academic manager or their delegate, to access your suitability and capacity to undertake the course.
Students are required to attend 20 hours of training and assessment per week. This comprises of 16 hours of face-to-face training and assessment in the classroom and 4 hours of scheduled, structured and supervised online learning per week.
Additional, unsupervised study is expected to be approximately 5 hours a week.
The training and assessment schedule shows the weeks during which training is delivered and assessment conducted for each unit. This is provided at orientation.

The units of competency to be delivered each term will be provided on orientation day. As this course is a nationally recognised qualification, you will be required to complete assessments for each unit of competency.
Following the completion of each topic and unit of competency you will have additional assessment tasks due 2 weeks after the completion of each unit. Assessment due dates are given to students at the beginning of each term and unit commencement.
The term break can also be used to provide additional learning support for any students at risk. Evidence collected will comply with the rules of evidence.
